چکیده

Handoff procedure in IEEE 802.11 wireless networks must be accomplished with as little interruption as possible to maintain the required quality of service (QoS). We have developed a fast handoff scheme, called AuthScan, to reduce the time-consuming channel scanning latency. AuthScan comprises two steps: First, a client caches its handoff history with beacon information. Second, when in need of handoff, a client transmits Authentication Request frames to the selected Access Points (APs) from the cache instead of broadcasting Probe Request frames like in active scan to discover the next AP. Our proposed method does not require any support from the infrastructure network and improve the efficiency of channel scanning. Furthermore, AuthScan requires neither hardware upgrades to the client, nor any modification to currently deployed APs. This paper presents the theoretical handoff latency of AuthScan, the effectiveness of our system through experiments, and the details of our demonstration.

FastScan: a handoff scheme for voice over IEEE 802.11 WLANs

IEEE 802.11 Wireless LANs are increasingly being used in enterprise environments for broadband access. Such large scale IEEE 802.11 WLAN deployments implies the need for client mobility support; a mobile station has to be “handed off” from one Access Point to another. Seamless handoff is possible for data traffic, which is not affected much by the handoff delay. However, voice traffic has strin...

A new SDN-based framework for wireless local area networks

Nowadays wireless networks are becoming important in personal and public communication andgrowing very rapidly. Similarly, Software Dened Network (SDN) is an emerging approach to over-come challenges of traditional networks. In this paper, a new SDN-based framework is proposedto ne-grained control of 802.11 Wireless LANs. This work describes the benets of programmableAcc...

Fast and Efficient IP Handover in IEEE 802.11 Wireless LANs

This paper presents an effective and simple solution to the problem of Layer 3 (L3) handover in IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs (WLANs), so as to extend the IP mobility area of 802.11 wireless Stations (STAs). The IEEE 802.11f Inter-Access Point Protocol (IAPP), handles the Layer 2 (L2) mobility of STAs during L2 (intra-network) handovers, and offers IP connectivity via L2 specific methods. Instead o...

A Fast Handoff Scheme of Ieee 802 . 11 Wireless Networks

The Handoff delay is one of the major problems in Wireless Network (WLN) that needs to be solved in order to allow time-critical and real-time applications run continuously during handoff. We have developed a fast handoff scheme called NodeScan (or MobileScan) to provide a novel use of channel scanning latency by employing open system authentication. This scheme comprises two steps: firstly a c...

A L2 Transmission Feedback based buffering scheme for Mobile IP handovers in an IEEE 802.11 wireless network

The IEEE 802.11 wireless network uses a hard handoff mechanism and thus makes it hard for higher layer mobility protocols to implement lossless handovers. In this paper we will show that using IEEE 802.11 transmission feedback data, we can optimize our smooth Mobile IP handoff scheme. Key–Words: IEEE 802.11, Mobile IP, fast handovers, crosslayer, smooth handovers
